Overview of Stainless Steel, Aluminium and Galvanized Iron Sheets
Stainless steel is an iron–based alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium and other elements such as nickel, molybdenum, and niobium which can increase its corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is often used in applications that require superior levels of strength, heat resistance, and durability. For example, it is used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other large structures. It is also highly resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for applications in coastal locations. We stock different grades of Stainless Steel Sheets such as Grade 304 (Food Grade), Grade 201 (both plain and hairline) and Grade 316.
Aluminum is a chemical element that occurs naturally and is the most abundant metal on earth. It has low density and is highly malleable, ductile, and corrosion–resistant. It is often used in construction due to its lightweight property, making it a great material for framing buildings and providing superior energy efficiency. It can be used in almost any form and can be rolled or extruded into a variety of shapes and thicknesses to meet design requirements. We mainly stock Aluminium Sheets Grade A1050.
Galvanized iron sheet is a sheet of–iron coated with zinc to form a coating that increases the sheet’s corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in building applications due to its general strength, durability, and low cost. The coating also makes the sheets resistant to rusting and while it may not be as strong as stainless steel or aluminum, it is ideal for large–scale structural applications that require large areas of protection from corrosion.
Uses of Stainless Steel, Aluminium and Galvanized Iron Sheets in Kenya
Stainless steel is mostly used in modern construction projects in Kenya, primarily for the fabrication of high–end structures. Its superior strength and durability make it ideal for buildings, bridges, and other complex structures. Furthermore, the material’s non–corrosive properties make it perfect for coastal locations. In addition to this, stainless steel is also used to make kitchen equipment, particularly those manufactured by premium brands, combining both aesthetic and practical values.
Aluminium is an ideal building material as it is both lightweight and versatile. It is used extensively in the Kenyan construction industry, mainly for roofing, cladding, and window frames. It is also an excellent material for making uniform long pieces such as purlins for roof trusses and as infill panels for staircases and other structures. It is also preferred for its low cost and its ability to easily be cut and moulded into any shape.
Galvanized iron sheets are most commonly used in roofing applications, as the zinc coating on them gives them superior protection against corrosion and increases the lifetime of the material. They are also widely employed in structural uses, particularly in large scale projects. Additionally, they are widely used in the manufacturing of water tanks due to their corrosion resistance.
